(This is the 3^rd scale in a collection of 7 that was owned by a collector, who was a geologist from the University of Pretoria)

Listings of similar items describe this scale as an Antique Apothecary Beam Balance Scale by W & T Avery Ltd Birmingham on a mahogany base. There are no weights with this scale.

It seems the scale was well used to judge from many minor scratches and dents on the mahogany base but it was well cared for. All the brass attachments are still in a good condition. The height of the upright pole, including the base, is 95cm. The dimensions of the base are 35cm x 66cm x 13cm.

The pans and the chains seem to be in a good condition. The diameter of the pans is 26cm. The cross beam measures 27 cm accross.

The W & T Avery stamp appears on the back and the front of the cross beam on the far left and right and on the pedal. The stamps are quite faded. Other stamps on the cross beam are T0 WEIGHT (to the left); 10LB (to the right) and F (or P) 617 in the middle. There is a red sticker on the right side of the base. See photograph.

The cross beam is suspended from the upright pole with a special brass attachment with heart-shaped detail and the chains of the pans are hooked on either side of the beam.The beam and the pans can detach. I think that the upright pole can be unscrewed from the base but I was not able to move it and did not want to force it.
