Offered for sale is a prattware lidded jar dating to the late 19th Century made in England during the late Victorian era . The jar was made for a manufacturer called Burgess and originally contained Anchovy paste then a popular and fashionable delicacy advertised as a " Gentlemans Relish " The anchovy paste was made from Spanish anchovy fillets usually cured in salt for more thn a year. The dish was served as a snack on toast or a side dsih with meat dishes. The jar is a simple round cylindrical shape made froma stoneware or high fired earthenware , with a slightly convex lid which has a transfer printed design/ decal including the name of the manufacturer, Burgess, the address Savoy Steps London and a rather comically imprecise Imperial Coat of Arms with The Lion and unicorn emblem. The pot is in good condition however there are two chips on the inside , the inner rim of the lid and the inner rim of the jar. The blemishes are not visible when the lid is in place so the piece displays well. Postage is R100 via Postnet or R120 for courier delivery to major cities in SA.
