This is an antique bronze casting of two pigs modeled by Jules Moigniez; a 19th century French sculptor. The work is called. From 1859 to 1892 Jules Moigniez displayed 30 animal groups in the Salon where he made his debut. Most of his sculptures were of game birds and hunting dogs. At the 1862 Exposition in London, he was awarded the English Medal Award, a prestigious honor. A highly regarded sculptor, his works were successful in France, England and America, where he sold most of his renowned game bird sculptures. He became ill in 1869 and no new models were produced thereafter. This work, named Truffle Sow, was modeled after the truffle pigs which were highly regarded by French chefs because of their unique skill to sniff out the rare subterranean mushroom used in French cuisine. These pigs are a wonderful sculpted and extremely detailed work. It is in excellent condition with a beautiful patina.
