Date: 1900-1930
History: The company was founded between 1898-1900 and produced dolls made from porcelain (bisque) wood, etc. In 1913 they started making celluloid dolls. By 1918 Schmidt had purchased the Bahr and Proschild porcelain company. In 1911 Bruno Schmidt advertised bent limb baby dolls, character dolls and ball-jointed dolls and this is possibly the date when this doll was made. Bruno Schmidt dolls usually show the letters BSW set within a heart shape emblem with Made in Germany just below. Sometimes the heads also show the crossed swords which was the Bahr & Proschild company.
Description: The Baby Doll as shown has a bisque head, brown sleep eyes, open mouth with tongue and a composition body. The BSW mark in a heart is shown with Made in Germany below and the number 5 above. There is no mold number. She has jointed bent legs and arms with jointed hands. Dolls from Bruno Schmidt are very sought after due to the fine workmanship the company always displayed.
Condition: No damage to the bisque head, eyelashes have been lost, there is wear to the body but no damage just showing a loss of paint. Some damage to the fingers including one broken finger and the tips of three others missing. The wig has been replaced and she is dressed in a well-preserved old cotton dress with embroidered flowers and lace.
