Calabash pipes (made famous by the character Sherlock Holmes) are made from well cured gourds grown especially for smoking pipes. This pipe is finished by lining the neck with clay (to form a bowl for the burning tobacco), and fitting it with an individually turned wood insert to hold the mouthpiece. The air space left below the lining ensures a cool, dry smoke, and the juices are absorbed into the shell itself allowing it to colour as it ages to a rich brown, like old polished leather. This pipe is pre-coloured, a preview of what is to come. The top of the bowl is finished with a solid silver ring, hallmarked for Birmingham, 1919 with maker's stamp "CF". Upon inspecting the bowl and mouthpiece, it is my opinion that the pipe is unsmoked.
Length : 17.5cm
Bowl diameter : 2.3cm
