Antique Child's Staffordshire blue and white transfer Mug 1820-1840 Ref. aug39

Now here is a very interesting piece, an early Staffordshire Child's Mug, dating, I think, somewhere around the 1820-1840 period. As there is no makers mark, dating an object like this becomes a little more difficult, but, there are some clues which can be followed. Transfer printed pottery was still in its infancy and early transfers were quite dark and sometimes slightly blurred. Glazes were uneven and rippled, often showing numerous bubbles.

The mug offered above appears to be an early transfer. It is rather crudely executed, depicting two monkeys and three figures. The scene shows poor detail, in keeping with an early age and is in a relatively dark grey-blue color on a light cream base, with a pearlware glaze. No doubt, the scene would have come from a story-book of that time. This mug would have been aimed at the lower middle class, the pottery shows numerous tiny brown spots and the glaze on the base is poor.
A thick, slightly uneven glaze with numerous tiny bubbles is evidence that glazing technique was not fully understood yet - it would take until 1835-1845 for good clear glazes to make their appearance.
The mug is still in excellent condition with no chips or cracks.
It stands 7.7cm high with a top diameter of 7.5cm and 7cm diameter at the base. This is a really interesting find as a child's mug of this age usually shows some crazing, cracks or chips
