This is a beautiful Chinese soapstone carving a fish, a traditional symbol of prosperity, abundance, and marital harmony. Material: Soapstone (softstone) with natural russet striations Design: Recumbent fish with scales and fins in shallow relief Feature: Small drilled hole at the top, possibly for use as a pendant or amulet Includes: Original carved black wooden display stand Condition: Good antique condition, with minor natural inclusions and age-related wear Background & Provenance: I purchased this piece many years ago on Etsy from a Portuguese seller for around R800 (excluding shipping), where it was described as MingQing dynasty inspired. Soapstone carvings like this were popular during the Qing dynasty (16441912) and continue to be collected today for their cultural symbolism and decorative appeal.
