IRONSTONE: The formula for 'Ironstone China' was originally discovered by Miles Mason and his son, Charles, in 1813. Ironstone China was extremely strong, with a slightly greyish tint, and composed from flint, slag from the iron smelters, stone and clay. It was very successful and was soon copied by other potters or improved on. However, even with this success, Masons were declared bankrupt in 1848 and the patent plus the designs and molds, were bought by Morley and Ashworth in 1858. They continued to produce Ironstone China, the wares being colourful and boldly painted.
CHUSAN: The "Chusan" or Willow pattern is an antique English pottery pattern. It was introduced in the late 1830s or early 1840s by Ridgway and featured in various forms like plates, bowls, and cups. The pattern often featured blue underglaze with iron-red and gold gilt overglaze, inspired by Far Eastern designs. This Chinese style pattern was produced with many variations by a number of English potters including Ashworth.
GL ASHWORTH & BROS (LTD): Ashworth Bros. was a company based in Hanley, England that produced ceramics from 1862 -1968. Ashworth Bros was founded in 1848 and was known for its high-quality, hand-crafted ceramics. The firm succeeded Morley & Ashworth (1858-60) which had acquired the rights to the Mason patent for ironstone china. In 1968 renamed Mason Ironstone China Ltd.
