Offered for sale is a fine small late 19th Century antique British parian ware ie bisque matte unglazed porcelain bust by the British manufacturer Copeland .The bust is a finely modelled portrait study of the Roman goddess Juno after an original marble bust by the French artist Louis Auguste Malempre (1820-1888). Malempre was a Belgian born French sculptor who exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy in London ; he was celebrated for his fine portrait studies and graceful allegorical figure studies in the NeoClassical revival taste. In classical mythology Juno was the wife of Jupiter and mother of Mars and was worshipped as the protector of the state and patron goddess of Rome. This depiction is based on antique marble portrait busts of Juno. The Copeland porcelain bust has an integrated plinth base ; another version was made with the more typical and traditional socle base.
