Antique Copper and Brass Coach Horn Two Piece Total 85cm Long  

ON AUCTION IS AN ANTIQUE COPPER AND BRASS COUCH HORN. IT IS 85CM LONG WITH AN 11CM DIAMETER BELL. IT IS A TWO PIECE COACH HORN WHICH CAN BE EASILY TRANSPORTED. THERE APPEARS TO BE FAINT ENGRAVED MARKS ON BRASS CONNECTOR PIECE BUT IT IS UNDECIPHERABLE TO ME.
 
The Coach Horn was used to tell the villages or hotels the Stagecoach was approaching. English coach horns were historically made from copper and brass during the 19th century to signal the arrival, departure, and hazards of Royal Mail and stage coaches. These long, straight horns served a functional purpose for the coach guard. They were designed for clarity and long-distance communication.  
 
GUARDS ON POSTAL AND STAGE COACHES USED COACH HORNS TO SIGNAL TO OTHERS ON THE ROAD, ANNOUNCE THEIR PRESENCE, AND WARN OF APPROACHING TRAFFIC.
 
The straight coach horn became the regulation instrument for Royal Mail coaches in England in the early 19th century.
 
THE HORN'S DESIGN WAS FOR PRACTICALITY AND SOUND PROJECTION, NOT INTRICATE MUSIC.
 
The horns were typically made of copper and brass.They had a conical bore, meaning the tube gradually widened towards the bell. A flugel like mouthpiece was used with these horns.
 
These were long, straight horns. For example, one horn was measured 122 cm in length. 
 
THE STRAIGHT COACH HORN WAS AN EXTENSION OF THE SHORTER POST HORN, ALSO USED BY MAIL CARRIERS. AND ALTHOUGH I HAVE SEEN FOX HUNTING HORN THIS LENGTH MOST WERE SHORT HORN TO CARRY ON HORSEBACK.
 
Some horns featured decorative elements, such as a stamped inscription or maker's mark.
