An antique 19th Century Dutch (possibly Cape Dutch) "doofpot". The doofpot is a typical Dutch example of frugality. It consists of a pot with a lid that can be sealed as airtight as possible. The pot often stands on small legs. The burning or smoldering pieces of wood were put into this when the inhabitants left the fire. The lack of air caused the wood to extinguish and char. This was particularly important in a time when fire hazards could be catastrophic as many homes were wooden and built close to each other.
This particular example is complete and original. The body is of solid copper with a brass domed lid with decorative turned finial. It has a solid brass handle with decorative escutcheons and stands on three turned brass feet.
Height (including finial) : 34 cm
Diameter (top) : 16 cm
Diameter (bottom) : 23 cm
