Description: Antique Dutch copper/brass Doofpot circa 1830-1850. Ref.,MA/45
Maker: The Netherlands .
Date: It is very difficult to date the doofpot accurately, but I believe around the 1830-1850 era .
History: The Doofpot was an article commonly found in middle class and upper class Dutch households. A doofpot was a container into which the frugal Dutch, before going to sleep at night, would place the remaining embers, partly burnt wood from their stoves or fireplaces. Putting on the tight fitting lid extinguished the flames, and, hey presto, the Dutch saved some of their precious wood (wood being expensive in the Netherlands) for the morning fire. It was also used because the early houses were often constructed out of wood and removing any burning piece of coal or wood before going to sleep at night meant less chance that a gust of wind would blow embers onto the wooden floor and start a fire. Clever people, the Dutch!!!
