  • Description: A rare antique polychrome Dutch Delft(?) Tile dated 1815.  Ref. CL-22
Maker: Unknown, but I believe it is Dutch faience. Although most tiles are said to be Delft, they were also produced in other towns like Amsterdam, Gouda, Makkum, Middelburg, Utrecht, Harlington etc. Many other European countries also produced tiles.
Date: Dated 1815 but this does not imply it was made in that year.
History: Faience is a French word depicting tin-glazed earthenware. The name Delft comes from the City of Delft which was famous for its blue and white earthenware and slightly later, its Polychrome earthenware (pieces showing different colours). The blue colouring was first used as the colour did not fade when the earthenware was heated in the kilns. These Delft tiles as well as other earthenware goods were very popular and exported widely throughout Europe and Britain. The Netherlands, at this time, was known for its prosperity and tiles were virtually only found in homes of wealth. From some research I believe the tile represents a soldier in the uniform of the Dutch Infantry taking into consideration the shape of the hat and the plume, the blue coat with orange cuffs (colours adopted by the Dutch some years earlier) the trousers and the style of the shoe. Note the thickness of the tile, early Dutch tiles were rather thick and heavy. Also take note of the granular appearance on the tile, glazing techniques still had to be refined. I have not come across and tiles like this on the web.
Condition: Unfortunately, the tile has been broken into two pieces at some stage and has been glued together. However, a simple job for a restoration project
    Dimensions: 13 cm x 13 cm x 1.2 cm
    Price: R700.00
