A superb example of a Dutch Christening spoon, (or 'Gelegenheidslepel' in Dutch).
The base of these spoons were usually engraved with the name and date of birth of the baby, but, this example was imported to England by a Samuel Boyce (Boaz) Landeck who sponsored fine silver imports from the Continent. Consequently, thespoon shows far more hall marks and stamps than those sold in the Netherlands. I have managed to identify nearly all the marks, but, some have eluded me. However, firstly , let's consider Samuel Boyce Landeck. Unfortunately, although his mark is found on the spoon, I cannot find out much about him. According to some records, he was a silversmith and Importer of Continental Silver and operated out of Campden Square, London, between the years 1893-1901. I have also found some records mentioning that he was registered in 1879 whilst other records state he operated between the years 1891-1987.
The hallmarks tell us a lot about the spoon, see photos. SLB - This was the stamp of Samuel Boyce Landeck. Lion passant, S, F Leopard head -indicate that it has been stamped with the Sheffield hallmark. The 'F' indicates it was foreign The crowned Lion below the Sheffield hallmark is the standard Coat of Arms mark for Holland and also indicates the purity is 934, higher than sterling silver which is 925.The 'duck' seen is the Guild mark for the Hague in Holland.
Maker - Paulus Arnoldus van der Beek. Born in the town of Sneek .Beautifully crafted of solid silver, the spoon with a typical 'egg' shaped bowl has an intertwined handle terminating in figural finial with figure of a bearded saint, holding a scroll. These intertwined handles appear to have been very popular, some dating back to the late 1700's. There is a winged "angel' at the base of the handle, this figure is often found on these christening spoons - who or what they represent is unknown. The letter 'J' in script seen at the top of the handle indicates the year 1893.Please take note there is a very slight 'split' to the top of the handle , shown on the left in the photo.
