Antique Dutch Silver Zeeland Button Belt Buckle - Zeeuwse Knop c1890-1910
A stunning piece of heritage, this antique Dutch silver Zeeland Button costume belt buckle is in impeccable condition, preserving the rich history of Dutch craftsmanship. Adorning the rectangular frame are 16 intricately designed silver Zeeland buttons, comprising 2 large and 14 smaller graduating ones, each a testament to traditional artistry. These buttons, known as Zilver Zeeuwse Knop, feature distinctive elements like intricate filigree work and delicate spherical forms, with subtle variations reflecting the unique character of each Zeeland district.
The buckle is adorned with two hallmarks, denoting its authenticity and quality. As these marks are very small it proved very difficult to take clear photo's of them. The maker's mark, JW, is a mark of craftsmanship, while the Dutch sword mark serves as a guarantee of its sterling quality (833). Not merely a decorative accessory, the Dutch Button has been an integral part of Zeeland's traditional costume since the 18th century, embodying the region's cultural identity and artistic legacy.
This beautiful buckle is in a an excellent condition considering its age, with no damage to report. It measures approximately 9.1 cm X 6.8cm and has a total weight of approximately 39g.
