Description: Antique Elkington Silver-Plated Cake Basket c1887. Ref.JW-13
Maker: Elkington, England
Date: 1887
History: Elkington and Co. purchased, in 1840, the rights to patent a new method of electroplating discovered by a local surgeon, John Wright. For this discovery, John Wright was paid the amount of £300, a high price indeed! However, the Elkington company saw the possible future of electroplate silver and the affordability it would create for silver articles. From 1850s onwards, Elkingtons won numerous awards for the excellence of their products, and held Royal Warrants from British Royalty including Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, Queen Alexandra, King George V, Queen Mary and King George VI.By 1880, the company employed over 1000 workers but by the 1900s, the work force diminished as the patent ran out and was copied by other manufacturers.
