Date: 1784
History: A rather early embroidered Sampler, likely to have been worked by a schoolgirl of between 7 to 10 years in age. These samplers were designed to teach the student Geography as well as fine needlework. The map of England and Wales was so popular that it was used in schools from around the 1770s right through to the 1840s.
Description: A rare map of England and Wales divided into counties, plus the edge of Scotland, Ireland, and France, top right corner with title and date within a bow-tied foliate wreath, county outlines finely worked on linen, in white, red, green, and yellow (now faded), text worked in cross-stitch in black thread, border of sinuous flower stems worked in different colours (possibly chenille), depicting assorted flowers (faded), some colour run .
Mounted in a wooden frame.
Condition: Overall in good condition which is rare for the age.
Dimensions: 60 cm x 68 cm.
