Description: Antique engraved Georgian Rummer  Circa 1795-1810.  Ref. GL-13
Maker: English or Scottish
Date: Estimated date 1795-1810. George III
History: A highly collectable Georgian hand-blown Rummer in lead glass. The word, Rummer is from the German Roemer, the name used for many years for this type of glass shape.
Description: A typical large round funnel shape with a short knobbed stem mounted on a ribbed, lemon squeezer square foot. The bowl is finely engraved with a shield proclaiming SPEED THE PLOUGH together with a sheath of corn, a plough and numerous other hand tools. On the reverse we find the initials RS engraved together with corn or barley plants. Look carefully at the foot and you will see where the bowl was fused to the foot. The foot was more likely to have been made by pressing molten glass into a mould. Very often this was attached after the engraver had finished the engraving. In many cases, the engraving was done in the Netherlands.
Condition: In very good condition overall. No chips on the rim of the bowl and just a few small chips on the foot.  Look carefully, and it appears the foot was re-polished at some stage to remove earlier chippings. This was a process often used as the heavy square foot was easily damaged. Note the polished pontil inside the foot.
Dimensions: Diameter of bowl 9.7 cm, diameter of foot 5.6 cm, height 14.3 cm
For comparison Google Scottish antiques and you will find prices for Georgian glassware in Britain. Possibly not a Speed the Plough Rummer as these are quite rare.!!
