Description: Antique Georgian Engraved hand blown Glass Compote/Centre piece. Ref.GL/9
Maker: Unknown
Date: Estimated date 1810 1820.
History: Look carefully at the colour of the glass.  You will see it has a slight grey tone, indicating it is likely to be a soda glass, used before the introduction of lead glass. Lead glass overtook soda glass by the early 1800s, it was brighter, colourless with no grey tones and became known as crystal glass. I have placed a date of around 1810-1820, however, it may be from the late 1700's.
Description: This is quite an unusual compote in that, apart from being hand blown in two sections and then fused together, the stem and foot are also hollow, allowing for a floral decoration in the centre whilst still space for fruit, etc. Look carefully at the glass itself and numerous bubbles and white inclusions are observed. The stem shows a whitish area where it was attached to the bowl. The foot is wheel-engraved with a floral decoration whilst the bowl itself shows a fern and leaf decoration. On the base, the number 2 has been engraved. The usual bubbles and swirl marks associated with hand-blown objects are noted, especially where the foot and the bowl were fused together.
Condition: Good condition throughout. A few very small flea-bite chips to the rim but, apart from that, the bowl is in very good condition
Dimensions: Diameter 16.3cm, height 11.3cm.

 Price: R750.00
