NOTES: Is there anything as moody and broody as the fern-like formations of moss agate? Said to resemble trees or ferns or heather on the moors, antique moss agate jewellery are distinctive and unique. The famous jeweller to the Russian Tsars from 1885-1915, Carl Faberg, adored working with moss agate. He would set it in gold with diamonds and other precious stones, in such a way that it looked like atmospheric miniature landscapes. In the late Georgian and the Victorian era, there was a fascination with nature and natural science. Naturalistic jewellery was an expression of progressive and modern thinking. The rarest moss agate pieces are those that are more translucent and less opaque.
