Antique Grainger period Royal Worcester wall pocket 'Water Lily' vase 1870-1889 Ref. oct15
Thomas Grainger, (1783-1839) an apprentice at Robert Chamberlain's Worcester factory, opened his company 'The Royal China Works' in 1801, together with his partner, John Wood. By 1804 they were advertising in the local newspapers and by 1806, they had opened their own shop. George Grainger, following the death of his father, Thomas in 1839, took over the business and developed more elaborate ornamental wares, targeting the wealthy industrialists as his clients. He was influenced by the Neo-Rococo era of the 1830's and 1840's and his designs were characterized by extravagant shapes, bright rich colors and scrolled gilding.
Following the death of George Grainger in 1889
the Grainger factory was sold to Royal Worcester
who continued manufacture on the St.Martin’s
Gate site until finally closing the works in 1902.
During the 1890's the Grainger factory
specialised in the production of hand painted
pieces for display, richly jewelled pieces and
ivory porcelain in a similar style to Royal
Worcester. Grainger wares were largely the work of Alfred Barry and the above 'Water Lily' can be possibly attributed to him.
The brown shield mark and the impressed mark seen on the back of the vase dates it to the Circa 1870 -1889 and is today known as the Royal Worcester 'Grainger Period'. The vase represents one of the last pieces which would have been produced by George, although the pattern was reproduced when the company had been purchased.
(A later version is currently on sale in Britain at GBP 85.00).
The above vase measures 11.5cm in length, 9cm wide and 8cm high. It is in a beautiful, delicate ivory-white porcelain against brown, gilded leaves.
There is no damage to the vase and no loss of gilding and remains in excellent condition throughout. This is definitely a collector's item!!
This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
