Antique Hand Carved P.O.W 'Coquilla Nut' Pomander/Snuff Box (With Provenance)
This wonderful, early, wooden egg-shaped 'Coquilla Nut' container (Pomander/Snuff Box) with provenance, has been beautifully hand-carved by, according to the note, a French POW from the Battle of Waterloo. It's decorated with bands and groups of circles, some pierced with tiny holes, and has a screw thread opening in the middle. Inside was a very early, stained and frail, handwritten note (dated 1841), which part of it read The snuff box was made in S.??? Barracks by the soldiers of the French army who were taken prisoner at the battle of Waterloo and confined in the above-named quarters', along with the details of the writer's oldest son on the other side, with whom she wanted it left to. The box measures 8cm x 5cm, weighs 50g and other a tiny crack (not loose or noticeable), it's in great condition with a lovely polished patina.
