Vintage Black Knight Hand Grinder made by Carborundum Company, Niagra Falls, New York, USA. This is an early 1910s made bench mounted, hand-cranked grinder.  The wheel turns freely, but the hand-crank shorts its wooden handle and the housing is cracked. A metal label on the gear box says "Black Knight, No. A-70". The label also has a picture of an Indian chief. These would have been in use during WW1 and even Ww2.

The Carboundum Company was founded in 1891 when a young scientist named Edward Goodrich Acheson attempted to create artificial diamonds using electricity. The crystals he created were assumed to be a byproduct of carbon and corundum thus the company name.
