Antique hand painted Gujarat Takhat, Indian Low Coffee Table, C.1850 Ref.W.17
Description: A rare, hand painted wooden 'Gujarat Takhat' octagonal table dating from around the 1850's depicting a female in traditional Mughal costume and a male in similar traditional costume smoking an early form of a hookah.
Maker: Unknown
Date: Around the 1850's although could be earlier.
History: The Mughal emperors, from the early 16th century to the early 18th century, built and ruled the Mughal Empire on the Indian subcontinent, mainly corresponding to the modern countries of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. The Mughals were a branch of the Timurid dynasty. Their power rapidly dwindled during the 18th century and the last of the emperors was deposed in 1857, with the establishment of the British Raj
Marks/Observations: The table is typically 'hand-made' using crude tools. Note the rough sawn marks to the underside of the table and the roughly shaped legs. The painting appears to have been done by a trained artist and shows fine workmanship.
Condition: Relatively good, considering the age. The table is robust, some early loss of paint and some scratches. The table top has been recently re-varnished to prevent any further loss of paint and design.
Dimensions: 63 cm in diameter x 15 cm in height
Price: R1500.00
