ANTIQUE HANDPAINTED DELFT (NO S!) BLAUW MUG WITH CROWN MARK MADE IN HOLLAND
A BEAUTIFUL LARGE (16CM HIGH) DELFT BLAUW MUG. HAND PAINTED WITH A FLORAL PATTERN AND A CRESTED LONGTAILED BIRD SITTING ON A BRANCH. MARKING: THE CROWN LOGO WITH WORDING DELFT BLAUW HANDPAINTED MADE IN HOLLAND. ALSO WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE MAKERS MARK HR. AS I UNDERSTAND IT SINCE THE DELFT HAS NO S LIKE IN DELFTS IT INDICATES THIS IS AN OLDER PIECE OF AROUND 1900. BUT I AM NO EXPERT ON THIS PLEASE TRY TO VERIFYYOURSELF ONLINE. In order to make the pottery more affordable than their Asian counterparts, the Dutch created Delftware with pieces of clay. Delft painters who have trained for more than 8 years hand-paint the pieces with a black paint containing cobalt oxide. When fired, the paint turns into brilliant shades of blue. Today markings on the bottom of Delft pieces will often say hand-painted in Holland along with any number of variations of the phrase Deflt blue in either Dutch or English. However, many modern pieces are not hand-painted at all, but are instead made by transfer and stamp. The phrase Delfts Blauw is often seen on items and indicates modern provenance. Around1900 markings indicated were spelled Delft with no s on the end. Prior to1900, it was hit or miss with hallmarks because many companies simply didnt mark their pieces at all.
