Antique Hicks and Meigh 'Water Lily" pattern Ironstone China plate
circa 1822-1830 Ref. P-18
The Hicks and Meigh company opened in Staffordshire 1806 by Job Meigh II who bought an earlier company, John and Edward Badderley, and manufactured Stone China wares usually in blue.By 1822, the company was joined by Johnson and became the Hicks, Meigh and Johnson company. They continued to make Stone China, and, by 1833, employed 600 odd workers. In 1835 the partnership was dissolved and the factory auctioned off. Their stoneware was similar to Mason and of excellent quality.

The Ironstone plate, as offered above, is a rare pattern, not often seen. It measures nearly 25cm in diameter and stands 2.5 cm high. The design of a water lily fills the centre with additional flowers on the rim. Partially transfer work, it was hand coloured and lastly gilding was added to the leaves. Some of the gilding on the rim has worn away. Hand colouring was necessary as only the cobalt blue would stand the initial high glazing temperature in the kiln. Hand colouring articles were then subjected to a further glaze at a lower temperature. The colors remain a vibrant cobalt blue, pink, red-brown and green. On the reverse we find the backstamp, in blue, attributed to Hicks and Meigh, a cartouche showing a central crown with the wording 'Ironstone" above and below the word 'Warrented No.5". The plate remains in very good condition with no cracks chips, or restoration, not bad for a plate that is close on 200 years old!! Small brown 'spots' (coal dust) in the body show that the article was coal fired. The glazing is still very good, quite an achievement for that period.
Please note, I am NOT a qualified archaeologist/antiquarian and the description I have given is based on research of the subject.
This is a genuine antique. The classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
