ANTIQUE JACOBUS STAINER VIOLIN
Jacobus Stainer full size copy
Dated "in Absam prope Oenipontum 1716"

Jacob Stainer was one of the most famous luthiers of his time in Europe before Stradivari, and the only non-Italian luthier to rank at the top of that artistic craft.
Until orchestral music replaced chamber music as the dominant form, Stainer's violins were more sought-after even than Stradivari's. He was born around 1617 in Absam, Austria.

The violin is in a well used condition. There are many wear and tear issues, missing strings and a crack in the top. The bridge is also missing.
One of the missing strings have been rolled up and placed inside the violin. The bow is intact and in good condition but would of course need new hair.
Despite all these issues we believe the violin can be restored, since there is only the one crack and no other major damage apart from the wear damage as per images.
The violin comes in the original case, which is made of wood. The hinges and clasps are intact but there is damage to the case along the edges and damage to the lining.
Detailed images are provided below. Please have a good look to verify condition and feel free to ask any questions.
The label inside the violin reads "Jacobus Stainer in Absam prope Oenipontum 1716". Since Stainer died in 1683, this violin is a copy of an original Stainer. How accurate the date on the label is, we do not know.
Please use the images for reference and do your own research to determine the age.
The violin appears to have been well crafted from quality materials, with good attention to detail and even if restoration is not your intention, it will make and excellent display piece as is.
The body measures 36cm and the total length is 60cm, making it a 4/4 or full size violin.
