This antique lapdesk measures 45cm x 24cm x 14cm when it is closed and 45cm x 57cm when it is opened.
When opened, the highest part of the slanted writing slope is 10cm and the lowest part is 4cm.
Two separate pieces of wood covered with red velvet on one side fit over the hollow compartments in the base of the desk and the lid and forms the writing surface. The compartments are a storage place for books or stationery.
Google searches of similar items suggested that the desk could be made from Walnut and there are some inlas from oter wood and two diamond shaped inlays with Mother of Pearl, which show some damage.
The top and sides of the desk when closed is in a fairly good condition with some damage to the inlay work on the edge. The part of the writing surface originally covered in what seemed to have been red velvet is very damaged. The uncovered reverse side still seems in a fair condition. The bottom part of the first compartment which is also the bottom of the box, has deep slashes that goes right through.
At the top of the slope when the desk is open there are compartments for writing material. They can also be removed to reveal some storage space for pens/pencils.
