Antique Minton's 'Amherst Japan' plate circa 1830 - Ref. Nov62
Minton's Ltd, was a major ceramics manufacturing company, originated with Thomas Minton (1765–1836) the founder of "Thomas Minton and Sons", who established his pottery factory in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England, in 1793, producing earthenware. He formed a partnership, Minton&Poulson, c.1796, with Joseph Poulson who made bone china from c.1798 in his new near-by china pottery. When Poulson died in 1808, Minton carried on alone, using Poulson's pottery for china until 1816. He built a new china pottery in 1824.Thomas Minton founded his factory in 1793/6 in Stoke-upon-Trent. Minton was Spode's nearest rival.
Minton did not mark their name on items until 1861, so this plate is marked simply with "Amherst Japan" within a scroll on its underside including the number '62' and 'Stone China'.
Also found an imprinted 'Improved Stone China' in a lozenge-shape. This pattern was originally designed in 1823 and was meant to resemble Derby Japan and Spode styles with Imari influenced decoration and colors. It is said to have been named after Lord Amherst, who headed a diplomatic mission to China in 1817.. The plate is decorated in cobalt blue underglaze with light yellow-green, blush, and China Red colors painted overglaze. This lovely pattern was produced for some 70 years. This is one of the earlier pieces (#62) and in spite of its size is incredibly light in weight. It has a few minor signs of wear and there is a chip to the side rim .It measures 25cm in diameter and stands 3cm high.
This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
