This auction is only for the beautiful old rule in the pictures.  The rest may probably be sold at a later date.

No reserve, very reasonable starting price for such an extremely scarce and collectible piece. This is an auction and has no Buy-it-now option.

A very unusual and collectible 24 inch Rabone 2-fold rule in brass with an ornate fleur-de-lis hinge and two disk guides. Both sides inch measurement. Can either be used or for display purposes

In fair condition apart from a notch cut on one end and as can be expected from something this old, the brass is a bit wavy when viewed side on and not perfectly straight (see photos). Easily rectifiable should it be required. The hinge is nice and tight.

This two foot rule is stamped by its very renowned Birmingham maker, John Rabone & Sons, Makers, Birmn. Saw one very similar recently being sold for GBP232 in UK. That particular was said to have dated from around 1890.

Some history on John Rabone and Sons of Hockley Abbey Works, Birmingham:

  • 1784 Company has its origins in Birmingham, as rule and tool makers
  • 1803 John Rabone was born
  • 1817 Rabone took over the business
  • 1845 John Rabone Junior joined the firm
  • 1871 The company moved to Hockley Abbey in Birmingham
  • 1872 The company's newly patented spirit levels and rules were exhibited in Moscow, Vienna, Sydney and Melbourne
  • 1873 Harry Rabone, John Junior's, son joined the firm
  • 1877 Arthur Rabone, another of John Junior's sons joined the business, after which the company became John Rabone and Sons
  • 1937 Listed Exhibitor - British Industries Fair. Rules, Measuring Tapes, Spirit Levels and Squares
  • 1963 The company merged with James Chesterman and Co, toolmakers of Sheffield, and the name was changed to Rabone Chesterman

For collectors’ purposes the rule was left as is, with the brass still retaining its desirable mellow appearance. The Buyer is welcome to perform additional cleaning, should he require that.

Unfortunately no pick-up of items. I will combine shipments, if requested (auctions within a reasonable period), but this may cost more depending on weight.

Shipping will be R35 in South Africa. All items will be properly packed. I am not responsible for any damages by the post office that happens during transit.

Any more questions or remarks relating to the item being sold are more than welcome.
