Antique 'Pekin' Japan patterned dinner plate, possibly Ashworth Circa 1862-1880 Ref. P/52
Description: Transfer-printed Chinoiserie Dinner Plate showing typical Imari colors, with scalloped edge
Maker: Unknown, but likely to be Ashworth
Date: 1863-1880
History: The pottery company George L Ashworth and Brothers was the successor to Mason's and used many of their moulds and patterns. This pattern, which has the pattern number B6107, is a good example as it was in use for around 100 years. The plate is painted with imari style colours, but this pattern was also produced using other colour schemes that included pastel blues and greens. The Ashworth brothers purchased the original Mason Ironstone designs and molds and produced ironstone extensively using the Mason printed marks. It traded under the name Geo. L. Ashworth and Brothers but was renamed 'Mason's Ironstone China Ltd" in 1968.
Marks/Observations: No marks on reverse, round "stilt" marks observed on front and back.
Tiny black 'spots' point to an early manufacture when kilns were still coal fired.
Condition: A small, tight crack of 5cm is observed on the reverse as well as a small chip under the rim. There is a small glazing fault on the design of the rim. Typical fine glazing cracks.
Some scratch marks as to be expected, colours are still vibrant and no loss of pattern.
