VICTORIAN (1856-1900) SILVERPLATED (ON BRITTANIA METAL) TEAPOT PHILLIP ASHBERRY AND SONS SHEFFIELD 130 YEARS OLD
ANTIQUE ELECTROPLATED BRITANNIA METAL (BRITANNIUM) TEAPOT WITH HINGED LID AND DECORATIVE FLORAL ENGRAVINGS. THIS BEAUTIFUL PATINAED TEAPOT WAS MADE BY PHILLIP ASHBERRY AND SONS, SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND BETWEEN 1856 AND 1900 MAKING IT OVER 130 YEARS OLD.
WITH A BAKELITE (I THINK) FINIAL ON THE LID AND FOUR HIGHLY DECORATIVE FOLIAGE FEET. THE HANDLE HAS BAKELITE (I THINK) HEAT INSULATING RINGS ON BOTH SIDES AND EXTENSION AT THE TOP TO PREVENT FORWARD SLIPPING OF THE TEAPOT WHEN POURING.
Britannia metal is a specific type of pewter alloy, favoured for its silvery appearance and smooth surface. The composition by weight is typically about 92% tin, 6% antimony, and 2% copper. From 1846, Britannia metal was widely used as the base metal for silver-plated household goods and cutlery and was a cheaper alternative to the more durable electroplated nickel silver.
MARKINGS: MARKED ON THE BOTTOM BRITANNIA / PHILIP ASHBERRY & SONS / SHEFFIELD / PATENT NO NON CONDUCTING HANDLE / 6 / 3611
SIZE: 24CM WIDE FROM SPOUT TO HANDLE 25CM HIGH
CONDITION: DARK WITH PATINA SHOWING ITS AGE. STRUCTURALLY STILL VERY GOOD CONDITION.
PHILIP ASHBERRY AND SONS (1856-1935): The teapot was produced by Phillip Ashberry and Sons of Sheffield England in business from 1856 until 1935. They produced silver plated items as well as pieces made from Britannia metal, an alloy that is comprised of tin, antimony, and copper. Judging by the markings this teapot was made between 1856 to 1900. Philip Ashberry began trading in 1829 making Britannia metal wares. The firm became "& Sons" in 1856 and "Ltd" in 1900. The firm was maintained under the control of Ashberry family until 1935 when Lewis Rose & Co purchased the site and demolished the old factory.
