Antique Plume and Atwood USA 1930s Depression Blue, Red and Milk Glass Oil Lamp Eagle Burner

ON AUCTION IS AN ANTIQUE DEPRESSION GLASS OIL LAMP MADE BY PLUME AND ATWOOD IN THE USA. THE FOUNT IS MILK GLASS WITH RED FLOWERS AROUND. IT SITS ON A COBALT BLUE GLASS BASE. THE BURNER HAS THE EAGLE EMBOSSED MARK AND THE WICK KNOB IS MARKED P&A FOR PLUME AND ATWOOD.

During the Great Depression (roughly 1920s to 1940s), lamps were produced with bases made from mass-produced, molded glass, which is known as Depression glass. These bases often feature distinct patterns and came in a variety of colors, including milky white and a range of blues.

Blue Depression glass can range from cobalt to a softer, lighter blue. Some collectors refer to lamps with blue fonts and P&A burners as a "P&A Hornet Cobalt Oil Kerosene Lamp".

Opaque white glass, often called milk glass, was also a popular material for Depression-era lamp bases. A vintage Plume & Atwood mini oil lamp with a white glass base and "swirl" pattern is a known example.

It was common for glass manufacturers to purchase P&A burners for their lamp designs. A "depression glass oil lamp c1930 with American Plume & Attwood E or O burner" is a prime example of this type of assembly.

An oil lamp provides light by burning fuel, typically paraffin or vegetable oil, drawn up a wick from a reservoir and ignited to produce a flame. Whale oil has often been used as fuel in the past (it is now banned for obvious ecological and ethical reasons). Historically a primary light source, oil lamps use a combination of a fuel chamber, wick, and fuel to function, and were made from materials like pottery, metal, or glass.

MARKING ON BURNER EAGLE:
An Eagle oil lamp is a collectible kerosene or oil lamp, often produced by companies like the Eagle Manufacturing Company or the P&A Mfg Company, and was popular before electricity became widespread. These lamps are known for their distinct burners, which feature the "Eagle" brand name.

PLUME AND ATWOOD (1871-1993):
Plume & Atwood was a Connecticut-based company, originally Holmes, Booth and Atwood, founded in 1869 to produce brass products, including parts for Seth Thomas clocks and brass sheets and wire. The company later diversified into manufacturing lamps and lamp trimmings under the name Plume & Atwood Manufacturing Company after 1871. The firm was acquired by Diversified Industries, Inc. but faced bankruptcy and closure in the 1990s.
The company began as Holmes, Booth and Atwood in 1869, founded by former partners from Holmes, Booth and Haydens. They purchased a brass mill in Thomaston, Connecticut, from Seth Thomas, agreeing to supply brass for the clock manufacturer. A legal challenge over the similar name led to the company adopting the name Plume & Atwood Manufacturing Company in 1871, named after its treasurer, David Scott Plume.
Initially focused on brass, producing sheet brass, wire, and parts for Seth Thomas clocks. They expanded to produce a full line of lamps and lamp trimmings, including various burner assemblies.
The company eventually became a division of Diversified Industries, Inc. but closed after the parent company filed for bankruptcy in 1993. Plume & Atwood products are now collectible items, particularly their antique oil lamps and lamp parts.
