Antique porcelain duo showing the Clifton Suspension Bridge circa 1860-1870 Ref. C-3

Isambard Kingdom Brunel was just 24 years of age when he entered his winning design for the Clifton Suspension Bridge which spans the Avon Gorge and links Bristol to Leigh Woods in Somerset. Originally planned as an very ornate bridge, including sphinxes as decorations, the lack of funds forced Brunel to redesign a much simpler version. However, a bridge across the gorge was first conceived by William Vick in the 1700s who left a legacy of £1,000 in his will to build a bridge sometime in the future, the technology not being available yet in his time.

But, Brunel never saw the completed bridge.  Although construction started in 1831, it was only completed in 1864 and Brunel had died in 1859.  History is vague regarding the construction, and, it is possible that his son, Henry Marc Brunel, also a respected engineer, may have finished the project.  It was a masterpiece of engineering, using totally new techniques, and, is said to be Brunels most famous landmark in Britain. Interesting points are that 99% of the original ironwork is still in place, a tribute to the quality of the day.

The porcelain cup and saucer, as shown above, are likely to date somewhere between the late 1860-1870 era. It shows a transfer design, in black, of the completed bridge with a large sailing ship in the centre and a number of smaller craft in the foreground and background. I would like to try and date the cup by the sailing ship,(steam was in during the 1880s) but, this may just be artistic licence. The artist has also included a locomotive on the left or the picture where it has come from is a mystery, there appears to be no tunnel!   I guess it looked good and demonstrated Industry. The cup is a typical bute shape, common in English porcelain of this period, and shows gilding on and under the rim, near the foot and on the saucer. The cup shows a typical ring handle with a small thumb rest .There is no makers name nor a registration mark, but, the saucer shows a incised #5, possibly a pattern number.  Some black coal spots are evident (pointing to a coal fired kiln) and the glaze is quite good with just a few bubbles. The cup stands 5.50 c m high with a diameter of 6.70 cm. The saucer stands 2.00 cm high with a diameter of 11.30 cm. Both pieces remain in very good condition with minimal loss of gilding.
