Antique Pre 1923 Joseph Rogers No 6 Norfolk St Lambsfoot Pocket knife
AN ANTIQUE (PRE 1923) JOSEPH ROGERS & SONS POCKET KNIFE. MARKED NO 6 NORFOLK ST. SHEFFIELD ENGLAND ON ONE SIDES RICASSO WITH THE STAR AND MALTESE CROSS ON THE OTHER. THE MARK OF THE STAR AND MALTESE CROSS ALTHOUGH WILL FOREVER BY ASSOCIATED WITH JOSEPH ROGERS WHO REGISTERED IT IN 1764.
FOUNDED IN 1730 JOSEPH ROGERS AND HIS 3 SONS BOUGHT A WORKSHOP AT NO 6 NORFOLK STREET, SHEFFIELD IN 1780 WHICH BECAME FAMOUSLY ASSOCIATED WITH JOSEPH ROGERS. THERE THEY INITIALLY CRAFTED PENS; AND TO SHOW OFF THE SKILLS OF THE CUTLERS, BECAME WORLD-RENOWNED FOR THEIR RANGE OF CUTLERY AND KNIVES. THEY MOVED PREMISES IN 1923 - HENCE NO 6 NORFOLK ST IS ONLY ON ALL THOSE KNIVES MADE BEFORE 1923.
Lambsfoot and Sheepsfoot blades are some of the most famous Sheffield patterns with a long history. Both are clawlike blades but a sheepfoot blade has an edge that is parallel to the spine or back of the blade. A lambfoot has a distinct distal taper, making the tip narrower than the area meeting the tang. The lambfoot blade with its tapered edge is popular with farmers, and amongst its many uses is the trimming of lambs' hooves!

JOSEPH ROGERS & SONS (1730-Present): Founded in 1730 Joseph Rodgers and his 3 sons bought a workshop at No 6 Norfolk street, Sheffield in 1780 which became famously associated with Joseph Rogers. There they initially crafted pens; and to show off the skills of the cutlers, became world-renowned for their range of cutlery and knives. They moved premises in 1923 - hence No 6 Norfolk St is only on all those knives made before 1923. The mark of The Star and Maltese Cross although will forever by associated with Joseph Rogers who registered it in 1764. In 1821 the firm was appointed cutlers to The Royal Family for the first time. Joseph Rodgers success is evident in the firms appointment to five successive sovereigns George IV, William IV, Queen Victoria, Edward II and George V. Rodgers focused on producing the finest quality knives and looked for the best in every aspect of knife production from materials to workmanship. Each knife was branded with the Star and Cross as a guarantee of its superb quality.
