Object of the Week: Raskin & Co Ginger bottle
Isaac Raskin started manufacturing Peak Brand aerated mineral waters and brewed ginger beer in Wolseley in 1906.
He moved to Ceres in 1912.
Before the Second World War bottles were imported, the ordinary glass ones from England and the stone ginger beer bottles from Holland.
Some of the smaller ones for Club Soda Water had a marble in the neck.
The ginger beer was not aerated but brewed over an open fire using whole ginger which was finely ground by a machine.
His shop and factory was situated in Trichard Street, Ceres previously known as New Street. Later he sold his factory and it was moved to where the hockey field of Charlie Hofmeyr is situated. It was then called Hubbly Bubbly.
