History

Leading carving experts, like Chris Pye, Ian Agrell, Mack Headley, when asked about classic tools, always list "Addis," "Herring Bros" and "Ward & Payne" as the best carving edge tool makers. Accurate, precision carving tools with perfect balance.

The Addis family were edge-tool makers as far back as 1717. Then in 1792 - Joseph James Addis born to Samuel Addis, became an edge tool maker in the true tradition, with two of his sons also becoming carving tool makers after him. The oldest was born in 1811 - Samuel Joseph Addis (S J Addis) and the youngest was born in 1829 - James Bacon Addis (J B Addis). From 1840 to 1858 when Joseph James died, his son S J Addis was working with him at 4 Church Street, Deptford, Kent/London as his partner/apprentice.

In 1851 both S J Addis and his brother J B Addis exhibited their tools at the first world fair, the Great London Exhibition. S J Addis continued making carving tools until his death in 1871, as did J B Addis until his death in 1890. Ward & Payne bought S J Addis business and contents in 1872.
