A characterful antique English folding pocket knife by S & J Kitchin of Sheffield, one of Sheffields historic cutlery manufacturers.
The knife features a wooden handle, folding steel blade and additional folding implement. The blade is clearly stamped S & J KITCHIN SHEFFIELD. Closed length is approximately 12 cm.
S & J Kitchin was a long-established Sheffield maker producing pocket knives, trade knives, razors, machetes and other cutlery. The company operated from the 19th century and was eventually acquired by Ralph Martindale in 1957, making surviving Kitchin-marked knives interesting pieces of Sheffield cutlery history.
This example has clearly seen considerable genuine use over its lifetime, with a wonderful aged wooden grip and strong patina throughout. One wooden handle scale is detached but included, as photographed.
A lovely old Sheffield-made knife with plenty of history and character, ideal for the antique knife, Sheffield cutlery or tool collector.
