UNIQUE VINTAGE SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS (SAR) SCALE - INCREDIBLE CONDITION FOR AGE

This cast iron and brass unequal arm balance scale with bronze pan and built-in counterweights is stamped SAR - SAS and numbered 5/340. The larger counterweight is stamped SAR.

Unfortunately the age and manufacturer are unknown. Although obviously very old, it appears complete and is yet in incredible condition for its age and the usage to which it must have been put.

With its two counterweights, the scale will weigh grams, ounces and it appears you can convert a pound to a bushel, a dry measure of 8 gallons for grains, fruit and so on.

The tape measure allows you to gauge the size of the scale. It is extremely attractive with lovely lines, almost cute, and will make a distinctive talking point among any SAR collection.

Undoubtedly one of the very few if any such scales still in existence.
