Shore Instruments metallurgy hardness tester. This instrument comes with a packing list indicating it is from 1916 and looks fairly complete including original glass tube, magnifying lens and testing blocks. Other bits and pieces also in the box as indicated in the photos. The box has some water damage.
This tester would have been used in a laboratory to test the hardness of metals by dropping a diamond tipped nib on to the sample and measuring it's rebound.
Very rare! Very collectible.
