Maker:Thomas Minton, England
Date: 1830
History: The firm at Stoke, Staffordshire, was founded by Thomas Minton in 1793. Previously, Thomas had worked as an engraver at the Coughley Potteries in Shropshire as well as an engraver with Josiah Spodes workshop. In 1817, due to the expansion of the business, Thomas took his sons into the business but it was only Herbert Minton who stayed. Thomas died in 1836 and Herbert took on a partner in that year and the company changed its name to Minton and Boyle.
Marks/Observations: An early transfer-ware printed pottery Bowl by Minton decorated with the Chinese Marine pattern. Minton produced a series of stylised Chinese landscape patterns, often copied by other potters. Many of these potters used the same back stamp but inserted their own initials. However, no-one could compete with the excellent quality produced by Minton. Until 1820, many wares were not marked but the earliest marks shown on the blue-printed wares consists of a scroll cartouche bearing a serial number or the name of the pattern above a cursive initial M. at the top of the cartouche is a winged, flying Dragon, whilst the words Opaque China occur below the M. THis backstamp was reproduced again when Minton and Boyle became partners but the initial M was changed to M. & B. The Serving Dish depicts a Chinese Pagoda, surrounded by a landscape of trees, water and Chinese Junks in the foreground. The sides are heavily decorated with flowers and the rim has a gadroon edge.
Condition: Very good condition throughout with no chips or cracks evident. A few small glaze imperfections are noted and there is a slight stain to the underneath of the bowl. Virtually no scratches on the glazed surface. This is a rare piece, especially considering its size.
Dimensions: 38.5 cm in length and a width of 25.5 cm. The dish stands 8.5 cm high
