Up for your consideration is a lovely antique wedding dress that is handsewn and made out of creamy white/Ivory colored silk.
It originates from a farm in the Karoo and is approximately 80 to 90 years old. It was kept for a very long time in the family.
It was made for a very slender, delicate woman. I could not fit it on my Mannequin. The waist from one side to the other measures only 29 cm !!!!. ( circumference 58 cm).
It is cut tight around the upper body with long arms.
The arms have satin-covered 15 hand- made buttons at the wrist. At one wrist 2 of the buttons are missing. There is a zip at the side that has been probably added later. I suppose that this dress has been inherited and was worn by a second woman at her wedding ( daughter, niece etc.)
It has a huge ball gown-skirt trailing out at the back, with an underskirt fitted to it which is made out of a satin material. And there is a third layer of white veil fabric keeping the skirt flowing.
This dress is in such a good condition that you could still wear it for your wedding if you have the right measurements.
There are some tiny age stains at the edge of the skirt hardly visible where the material has become browner in one or two places.
If you intend wearing it it has to be said that is very heavy. It is a dress for a person who wants something special and unique for her wedding.
But it is so special that it would deserve a place in a museum as well. This is a dress to enchant you with the flair and elegance of a by-gone area.
A lovely item for display as well.
