This lovely, very early South African Railways (S.A.R.) brass whistle, complete with a solid silver fob chain, as used by a conductor, is in great condition for its age. The whistle 'THE ACME THUNDERER' was manufactured in England in the early 1900's. It is heavy and made of a thick gauge brass and works well. It is impressed on the front of the mouthpiece with the words 'THE ACME, THUNDERER' and underneath 'HUDSON'S PATENT.' On one side it is impressed '1911' and the other 'S.A.R.' The heavy fob chain, although not marked, is solid silver (as tested by a jeweller). The split ring and catch at the end aren't silver. The whistle and chain measures 47cm in length and weighs 83.8g. This is a lovely piece of Railwayana and I have noticed, whilst researching, that these early whistles fetch anywhere between £100 - £400 on auction.
Note: This firm was founded in the 1870's in Birmingham by Joseph Hudson (1848 - 1930) and his brother James Hudson. The company continues today as 'Acme Whistles' and is the worlds largest and most famous producer of whistles.
