Date: Estimated 1830 - 1860
History: The Cow Creamer was the inspiration from the Dutch, when, in the 1750s, John Schuppe, a Dutch silversmith, and an immigrant to England, started producing silver cow-shaped creamers. They were very successful and the idea was soon copied in pottery (for the poorer people) in Staffordshire, especially in Stoke on Trent. From the mid 1700s to the 1880s, the cow has more or less remained the same, either standing on a base or on all four feet with the tail upturned acting as the handle. Milkmaids, calves etc were all introduced throughout the years, but the Cow Creamer on offer is very typical of the model from the 1830 1860 period.
Marks/Observations: The creamer shows a typical blue Chinoiserie transfer design, so popular in the early 1800s. Blue was also the only colour which would withstand the heat of the furnace. Take note, the grass the horns and the details on the face are an overglaze painting. This means these details were applied after the final glaze had been applied as the black and green colours would not stand up to the high temperatures. A thick and uneven glaze showing numerous tiny brown spots dust from the coal or wood fired furnace. Bubbles are also apparent, glazing being a rather trial and error process in the early 1800s. Look inside the Cow and you will see an uneven seam line. These Cow Creamers were made in two halves, the clay being pressed into the two moulds and then assembled using clay as the adhesive, another factor pointing to its early age. Later creamers were slip cast, as a single piece.
Condition: The Cow remains in very good condition, with no obvious cracks nor large chips on the body (there is one tiny fleabite chip to the opening on the back). The small lid (usually lost) has had slight restoration work to the one end. There is one small firing flaw at the beginning of the tail. Ears and horns appear to be undamaged and original.
Dimensions: The Cow stands 12.6 cm high (to top of horns) and 16.5 cm in length. The width of the base is 8.1 cm
