Antique Staffordshire Chinoiserie Cup/Saucer circa 1830-1850 Ref Nov31B
A very attractive  Staffordshire Chinoiserie cup and saucer, dating, I believe, to around the 1830-1850 era.
Like so many of these cups, they are difficult to date as the majority of the smaller potteries never marked their wares, or bought the unfinished, unfired wares and just decorated them. I have two sets on offer, identical patterns on both, but, the above cup shows three 'dots' on the base.  Whether this signifies a makers mark is difficult to say.
Minton did use a 'three dot' mark in 1851 which would tie in with the duo tut they were impressed into the clay.

The set is in a fairly heavy translucent pearlware porcelain.  Pearlware  appeared for a brief period from 1820s during the reign of George IV.  The pattern is a 'filled-in or clobbered polychrome transfer  in a typical Chinoiserie style. Chinoiserie designs were in vogue at this time and the above set is a typical example. There is some wear to lustre on the rim of the cup as well as the saucer, but, considering its age, this set is in very nice condition with just one very small crack to the bottom rim of the cup. I'm not sure whether this isn't a firing flaw. Look carefully at the glaze, and you will see it has an 'orange-skin' texture, with very small 'blow holes' pointing to an early manufacture.  Glazing had not yet been perfected.
This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
