This lovely, early 1920's, heavy, very good quality, lidded, milk pot or jug is from one of the early steamships. It is silver-plated on brass and made by one of the top British silversmiths 'Mappin & Webb' in Sheffield, England. The jug has a nice shape, with an unusual beak shaped pouring hinged lid, and has an attractive 'Bright-cut', engraved pattern around the bottom above the base, and the same, around the top below the lid. The 'Union Castle Line' emblem is engraved on the side, and the 'MAPPIN & WEBB, PRINCESS PLATE' trademark is stamped on the base. Other than a minor soft dent near the base, its in a good used condition. It stands 16cm high, a base diameter of 10cm, a handle to spout measurement of 13,5cm and weighs 660g.
