Antique  Victorian 3-fluted hand blown glass Epergne circa 1880-1890. Ref. MA10

An epergne is a table center piece that was introduced in Europe in the early 1700s. Generally made from silver, the most popular style had a dominant column or large raised bowl in its center. Stylized branches or arms extended out from the center column, with each of these branches holding smaller dishes for sweetmeats.

The Victorians, around 1837 to 1900's decided to create beautiful epergnes that were made exclusively of glass. Less expensive than silver, they were to be found in the middle-class homes as well as the wealthy. Usually made of red, clear, or green glass, they were used for the display of flowers whilst the centre bowl held sweetmeats and bonbons. Being very delicate, they were also known as "a housemaid's nightmare".

During the later years of the Victorian era, the influence of Art Nouveau caused the glass flutes on epergnes  to take  on more of a lily shape, as is shown on the epergne above. This epergne shows a ruffled bowl, measuring  29cm in diameter, and three hand blown trumpets (or flutes) all which are removable,  set in a brass holder.  The total height of the epergne is 40cm. It remains in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or scratches. Look carefully at the bowl in particular and you will observe myriads of bubbles from the hand blowing.
The colour is an opalescent blue-green, commonly referred to as 'vaseline glass' or 'uranium glass' as uranium was used to create this color. Uranium was already used in the mid 1800's, but, to determine that an object is a genuine "uranium glass' it should be viewed under an ultraviolet light. If genuine, the glass will fluoresce.
I have not carried out this test.

Please note, I am NOT a qualified archaeologist/antiquarian and the description I have given is based on research of the subject.
This is a genuine antique. The classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
