Date: Estimated 1860-1870
History: George Marris was a well-known cabinet maker and furnisher operating from Bull Street, Birmingham. By 1875, he had entered a partnership to become "Marris & Norton". The Furniture Gazette of June 1875 describes the company as high class furniture. The company was also listed in the Furniture Gazette Directory in 1877.
The first davenport was made by the firm Gillows of Lancaster around 1790 and was commissioned for Captain Davenport (hence the name, Davenport) and designed to be a small, compact, sturdy desk, easy to move and to be used on ships.
Description: The davenport is of walnut and burr walnut with the interior of the desk in a lighter coloured wood, likely to be Birch. Typical of most davenports, it has a writing slope with a leather insert. Inside the desk is a false front with a smaller drawer and open compartments on each side. Inside the drawer, and stuck to the base, you will find a paper label from the original company (before the partnership), namely G. Marris , Bull Street, Birmingham as well as a number which looks like 60/70. Burr walnut is found as a heavy veneer, to the top, writing section of the davenport with plain walnut (?)used for the rest of the construction.As is typical, the one side features four functional drawers while the opposite side shows four dummy drawer fronts for symmetry. The high quality burr walnut veneers, the serpentine (curved) front, the heavily carved cabriole scroll supports and the bun feet are all indicative of premium 1860-1870s design.
Condition: The davenport remains in good condition with some very small losses of veneer to the base and slight loss of veneer on the inside of the desk where the small drawer is found. The top walnut section used for housing pens, pencils and inks shows loss of ink bottles and the base for the pencils. Evidence of an earlier restoration is noted.
