Antique Victorian Cobalt Blue Glass Scent Bottle, Circa 1870-1890 Ref.JW6
On offer is this stunning Victorian Scent bottle in a rich cobalt-blue glass with  silver ends, both ends being hand-engraved. The section for perfume has a screw fitting with a cork stopper. Unfortunately, the cork stopper has, at some time, being pushed tightly into the end and cannot be removed without possible damage to the bottle. The smelling salts section has an intricate hinged cap, with a sliding mechanism for opening the end ever so slightly.
The bottle would have been made by melting two separate bottles end-on, creating a ‘double ended’ bottle. Look carefully, and you will see the join.  Finishing would be by hand cutting and polishing a number of flat prism faces, often with elaborate designs.  In the case of the scent bottle as shown, it has 16 prism faces! These perfume or scent bottles can be traced back to around the early 1800’s, however, the one advertised is likely to have been made around the 1870-1890 period. The majority of the bottles were of clear glass, the rich colours of red, blue, green, purple and yellow being somewhat scarce.

These bottles were meant to hold perfume at one end and smelling salts at the other end. The ladies of the day were prone to fainting from being very ‘delicate’, (but, more likely from wearing their corsets too tightly) and the smelling salts were meant to revive them!
The Scent Bottle, as offered, is 10.5cm in length with a diameter of 2.8cm  The silver ends remain in good condition with no obvious damage. The hinge is sound and both the end pieces open and close securely. The glass prism faces are in good condition.

This is a genuine antique. The classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
