Antique Victorian Cranberry Glass Scent Bottle, Circa 1870-1890 Ref.JW5
On offer is this stunning Victorian Scent bottle in a rich cranberry red glass with gilded silver ends, complete with the glass stopper - usually found missing in these scent bottles.
The bottle would have been made by melting two separate bottles end-on, creating a ‘double ended’ bottle. Look carefully, and you will see the join. Finishing would be by hand cutting and polishing a number of flat prism faces, often with elaborate designs. In the case of the scent bottle as shown, it has mix of 30 diamond and half-diamond shaped faces! These perfume or scent bottles can be traced back to around the early 1800’s, however, the one advertised is likely to have been made around the 1870-1890 period. The majority of the bottles were of clear glass, the rich colours of red, blue, green, purple and yellow being somewhat scarce.
These bottles were meant to hold perfume at one end and smelling salts at the other end. The ladies of the day were prone to fainting from being very ‘delicate’, (but, more likely from wearing their corsets too tightly) and the smelling salts were meant to revive them!
The Scent Bottle, as offered, is 13cm in length with a diameter of 2.7cm The gilded silver ends remain in good condition with just some slight indentations to the one end. The hinges are undamaged and the end pieces open and close securely. The glass stopper for the perfume is in place and is undamaged. On the opposite side, which would hold the smelling salts, it would likely have had a cork stopper which is missing. The glass prism faces are in good condition. There is one small rough area where the face was not polished sufficiently.
